The news lately has been totally saturated with reports about Benazir Bhutto’s death. You would think it was the People’s Princess all over again. I’m pretty certain though that I’m not the only one who thinks it’s rather excessive.
There’s now quite a sizeable Polish minority in the UK now who don’t get nearly as much coverage in the press as the Pakistani community do. I’d love to see more representation and news about Poland and Eastern Europe instead for a change. Or at least in Eastenders – how long must we wait to see a Polski Sklep there? Today I saw that a new asian family has just moved in… (An admission, I only watch Eastenders because Silvia likes it and finds it a most educational way to learn English.)
Many commentators, especially Pakistani ones have said that Bhutto would have just been a stooge of the Western governments. Also they’ll recall she never did much for women’s rights other than give out a lot of hot air when she was actually in power. She stole from the people just like everyone else in charge before and after her. So why so much coverage?
The Pakistanis encouraged Jihad in Afghanistan and thereby helped with training up Bhutto’s eventual attackers. The Pakistani secret service, the ISI created the Taleban. After US-backed success in Afghanistan they sent the Jihadists to India to try to notch up another victory in Kashmir. They were cheering them on as freedom fighters. Now those chickens have come home to roost and Pakistanis worldwide are crying that “terrorism is wrong!”
The military have interests and control in almost every part of Pakistans economy and they will not give up power to the Islamists easily, readily nor willingly and I can just see that the dictatorships will continue, keeping things in check, just like the iron-fisted Saddam Hussain managed to control Iraq for so many years. Unless the helpful superpower decides to liberate the people once more…
Jinnah the founder of Pakistan has reaped what he sowed creating a country purely on the basis of religion. He planted the seeds that have led to todays unstable situation in Pakistan (and also Bangladesh which currently has military rule). Jinnah created a monster by pushing and agitating for the creation of Pakistan. How did he think it would end up? Peace and harmony?
The example of secular India has shown the right way.
